Canada Day

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

I have met a bunch of Canadians in my caravan park that I get along with quite well. In order for our group to have some of the comforts of home, we decided to make August 20 Canada day(yeah, I know, it’s a little late).

Our celebration included pancakes and poutine which were delicious. We had hoped to have a game of street hockey too, but the lack of sticks made that impossible.

Now that Canada Day is done, it is time to leave Broome. Tomorrow, I will be starting the drive to Darwin. If only petrol didn’t cost $1.56 a litre.

Walking to the moon

Friday, August 11th, 2006

There is not much to report home on the work front. I put in little effort, my boss says that I am doing a good job, and I’m getting paid.

Other than work, the main thing to tell you about is Staircase to the Moon. I was fortunate enough to witness the natural event for the second time last night. For an explanation of what Staircase to the Moon is all about, check out the following link Broome Staircase.

The moon and steps are tough to capture on a simple camera without a tripod. Due to the difficulty, I am quite proud of my photo below.

Working on Broome Time

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

As it was time for me to rejoin the working world temporarily I headed to the local job agency in search of employment. They found me a job where I am supposed to be helping a car body shop move to a new location. I was given directions, some basic instructions, and told to be at work on Mon. at 7am.

So, on Monday morning I showed up at work at 7:00 am and asked what to do. I was told to hang tight until someone could give me some instructions. At 8:00 am I was given my task for the day. At 12:00 pm I was done. After that I just hung around, helped guys as needed, and tried to pass the time til 4 pm rolled around. What a boring day.

I assumed that maybe things would pick up on the second day. Never make assumptions! Today, Tuesday, there was nothing to do for the move. So I kept busy by washing cars, applying paint protection to a ute, and then went home early as there was nothing left to do.

I am guessing that his job won’t last long at this rate. Maybe til the end of the week and that will be it.

Keep working hard at home.

Cheers,
Marc

A small adventure

Friday, August 4th, 2006

In order to see some of the local national parks and to do a bit of the Gibb River Road, I decided to do a day tour through part of the Kimberley.

A road train on the Gibb River Road

The tour was intentse, pick up at 6:30 am and drop off at 10:30 pm. Between these times we would do 800 km, eat 3 meals, have 2 snacks, and pack in the tourist attractions. But it was definitely a worth while experience.

The first stop was the Prison Boab Tree. This tree was used to hold aboriginal prisoners as they were being marched down the Gibb River Road. This tree, along with all boab trees, are considered sacred to the aborignals and they believe that defacing a tree will bring very bad luck.

From the tree we hit the Gibb River road, a wonderfully corrugated 4WD drive only highway. From the Gibb River road we got on to Fairfield Leopold Downs Rd. which made the Gibb River Rd. seem quite smoothe. Fairfield Leopold Downs hasn’t been greaded for a while which left us, the passengers, bouncing around in the truck which was a blast and made for a great adventure.

Along the road we stopped at Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. Two beautiful national parks.

After visiting the two national parks we headed back to Broome and had dinner along the way.

All in all, it was a great day.
